Gendering HIV/AIDS Prevention: Exploring Gender as a Risk Factor in Canadian and South African Youth
June Larkin, Claudia Mitchell, and Ann Smith
DESCRIPTION
In this project we will draw on our experiences in South Africa to develop a gender analysis of HIV/AIDS and youth.
Our overall goal is to explore ways to create an "action space" for Canadian and South African youth in education related to gender and HIV/AIDS prevention.
We will examine the ways gender acts as a conduit for HIV transmission and we will explore possibilities for involving youth in the development and delivery of HIV/AIDS prevention programmes.
Our project responds to concerns about the growing rate of HIV infection in Canadian and South African youth and the belief that youth are our best resource for changing the course of the AIDS epidemic.
OBJECTIVES
- To explore the issues related to gender, HIV/AIDS with youth in Canada and South Africa
- To address the best approaches for doing HIV/AIDS education with youth
- To consider the possibilities of popular culture/media in HIV/AIDS prevention programs with youth
- To explore participatory approaches to involving youth in HIV/AIDS education and research
This project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada/Conseil de recherches en sciences humaines du Canada.
