Artfully Engaged: Arts Activism and HIV/AIDS Work With Youth in South Africa
By Walsh, S., Mitchell, C.

In this chapter we explore the ways that being ‘artfully engaged’ is contributing to the empowerment of a group of young people in South Africa to take action in relation to their own bodies, sexuality and HIV prevention. In a country where the infection rates are 19.9% (UNAIDS, 2000), where young people are a particularly vulnerable population, and where young women are at the greatest risk, both due to their biological vulnerability and the high incidence of gender-based violence, the stakes in engaging young people in any sort of prevention strategy are high. How does an engagement in arts-informed action research effect personal behaviour change in youth?
