Innovative research by Robert Diaz published in the October 2016 issue of Journal of Asian American Studies (JAAS).

In his article “Queer Unsettlements: Diasporic Filipinos in Canada’s World Pride,” Robert Diaz examines the theoretical possibilities of queering Filipino Canadian migration research. He revisits two events that occurred during the 2014 World Pride celebrations in Toronto—Julius Manapul’s art exhibit “Cabinet of Queeriosities” and the Miss Gay Philippines Canada beauty pageant. He argues that through art and performance, queer, transgender and diasporic migrants negotiate the demands of multiculturalism and settler colonialism. They will new worlds and new utopias amid the limits of this one.
